“PEOPLE don’t like me anymore, Rafizi doesn’t like me either, he said don’t continue Azam Baki,” joked the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Tan Sri Azam Baki, when hinting that his term of service would end next year.

Azam said that his contract, which had been extended thrice before, had caused dissatisfaction among certain parties.

“God willing, next year my term of service will end. It has been extended thrice before,” he said.

He however stressed that the issue of who will replace him is not important, as long as the task of fighting corruption continues. “What is important is that my successor continues the agenda of improving integrity, promoting good governance and enforcing anti-corruption laws without fear or favour,” he said.

Earlier, it was reported that Pandan Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, suggested that Pakatan Harapan (PH) take immediate steps to restore the people’s confidence in its commitment to fighting corruption following its poor showing in the 17th Sabah State Election (PRN).

Rafizi stated that the move could begin by not renewing Azam's contract as MACC Chief Commissioner.

According to him, in the Dewan Rakyat session this week, issues related to Azam's contract were also raised, including the question of whether it would be renewed for a fourth time.

Rafizi stressed that if the contract is extended, it will only tarnish the credibility of PH and PKR as parties that are firm against corruption.

He added that with the various controversies that have been associated with Azam, it is time for the contract to not be extended. – December 10, 2025
