PRESERVING Malaysia’s heritage is a matter of reinforcing national identity and values, rather than simply recalling the past, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim declared today at the official reopening of Seri Negara, following its extensive restoration by Khazanah Nasional.
“This project represents more than a facelift; it is a bold statement of national identity and pride,” Anwar said, noting that the historic building, which once symbolised colonial power, now embodies Malaysia’s values, history and aspirations.
“Malaysia’s independence is only meaningful when its heritage is reclaimed. For too long, these buildings stood as symbols of colonial authority and elitism.
“Independence is not only about governance, it is also about freeing the mind, spirit and identity of the people,” he added.
Among those attending the ceremony were Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Khazanah Nasional managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, Tunku Besar Seri Menanti Tunku Ali Redhauddin, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud, Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
The Prime Minister stressed that heritage sites should not remain exclusive enclaves for the elite but must serve as accessible platforms for public engagement, learning and cultural expression.
He framed this approach within the concept of Malaysia Madani, which promotes inclusivity while maintaining professional care and stewardship of heritage assets.
“For the first time, we are witnessing a heritage building restored with such attention and then returned fully to the people. This is what gives it meaning,” he said, emphasising the importance of exposing younger generations to the realities of the nation’s history to foster a sense of responsibility and appreciation for independence.
“This space must belong to the people — schoolchildren, young Malaysians and ordinary citizens — so they can understand that independence came at a cost of sacrifice, struggle, sweat and tears,” he added.
Khazanah Nasional has been entrusted with the preservation and restoration of eight historic buildings, allocating RM600 million for the initiative.
Seri Negara is among ten flagship pilot projects under the Warisan KL programme, which seeks to transform Kuala Lumpur into a vibrant cultural and creative hub in line with the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040.
The restoration of Seri Negara, completed ahead of schedule in ten months rather than the projected two years, retained the building’s original architectural character while enhancing safety, accessibility and public facilities, allowing Malaysians to reconnect with a pivotal chapter of the nation’s history.
“Heritage assets are not merely old structures. They hold the key to the narrative of our nation’s formation and progress.
“Without respect for history, the progress we achieve becomes detached from the identity, lessons and continuity that form the foundation of a nation,” said Khazanah managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir at the ceremony.
The Warisan KL initiative also includes the preservation of Carcosa at Bukit Carcosa and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building Complex, encompassing multiple heritage structures such as the former Kuala Lumpur High Court, Panggung Bandaraya, and the National Textile Museum, all funded under the RM600 million programme.
Seri Negara will now feature the Seri Negara Gallery, dedicated to Malaysia’s journey to independence, alongside a café and restaurant operated by the Serai Group, offering visitors a nostalgic culinary experience. While Semuka Café is open to the public, Serai House currently operates on a reservation basis.
Visitors to the gallery must register through the Sahabat Seri Negara programme, in line with its Warisan heritage status.
This landmark restoration underscores Malaysia’s commitment to preserving its heritage while ensuring that historic spaces remain living, accessible sites for education, culture, and public engagement. - December 15, 2025
