A LAWYER has been taken into custody in connection with an alleged plot to help a prisoner smuggle illegal drugs into Penjara Marang, authorities in Terengganu said, as investigators pursue another suspect linked to the case.
Terengganu Police Chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin confirmed that the 32‑year‑old lawyer is suspected of colluding with a 25‑year‑old local inmate who was caught attempting to bring drugs into Penjara Marang.
On December 23 at around 5pm, senior officers at Penjara Marang conducted a routine intake screening for the male inmate, who had just been discharged from a session in the Kuala Terengganu High Court. An initial scan using a body‑imaging machine detected foreign objects inside the inmate’s body.
“Following that, the inmate was isolated and placed under close observation in the prison clinic. The next day, on December 24, he was taken to the Merchang Health Clinic for further examination.
“The examination found several suspicious foreign objects inside the inmate,” Mohd Khairi said at a press conference at the Terengganu Contingent Police Headquarters today.
The inmate was returned to the prison and again kept in isolation. That same day he passed 12 parcels suspected to contain drugs, including yaba pills and cannabis.
On December 25, at the same location, the inmate again passed 14 parcels suspected to contain yaba pills and Erimin 5 during a bowel movement.
Following these developments, prison officials filed a police report at Balai Polis Marang, and investigations were opened under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The seized drugs — 123 grams of yaba pills, 21 grams of cannabis and 13 grams of Erimin 5 — were estimated to be enough for about 800 users, with a total street value of RM16,000.
The Terengganu Contingent Narcotics Crime Investigation Department subsequently launched a deeper investigation and arrested the lawyer to assist in the case. A urine test showed that the suspect was negative for drugs. He has been remanded for six days from December 30 to January 4.
The case is being investigated under Section 107(C) of the Penal Code for abetment, which carries a possible sentence of death or life imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane if convicted.
Datuk Mohd Khairi said that with both suspects now in custody, police are urging the public, particularly a woman named Nurul Norasikin Aladin, 30, from Kampung Batin, Seberang Takir, to come forward to assist with the investigation.
He said Nurul Norasikin, also known as “Ikin”, should contact investigating officer Assistant Superintendent Mohammad Azmi Awang Lah at 010‑9213516.
For context, there were four drug seizures in lockups in 2024 and one the previous year, bringing the total number of such incidents to five. - January 1, 2026
