A SULTAN Zainal Abidin University (UniSZA) student died in an accident involving two cars in Kuala Terengganu, today.
The incident occurred at about 1.31pm at the four-way traffic light junction on Jalan Bukit Kecil, near the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
The victim was identified as Syakirah Hanan Mazli, 24, from Johor Bahru and was confirmed dead at the scene of the accident due to the strong impact.
Based on a dashcam recording that went viral, the accident is believed to have occurred when a Honda Jazz driven by a man sped up and crashed into a Perodua Viva driven by the victim, who was turning right to make a U-turn after the traffic light turned green.
Kuala Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Commander, Mohd Salleh Abdullah said it took them about 20 minutes to extract the trapped victim.
He said the fire department received an emergency call at 1.39pm and arrived at the location about a minute later.
“Upon arrival, we found that the male driver, who has not yet been identified, had been pulled out by members of the public and rushed to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ).
“We had to ensure that the trapped victim was free from any electric current following the collapse of an electric pole which was hit in the accident,” he said.
The victim’s body was then handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for further action.
In a related development, the UniSZA Student Affairs Office (HEPA) confirmed that the victim was a Postgraduate Diploma in Education student, Faculty of Contemporary Islamic Studies.
The university expressed its condolences over the incident and is dealing with the authorities and the hospital for further matters, in addition to channeling death assistance including a donation of RM6,000 and death insurance totaling RM12,000. – January 5, 2026
