FORMER Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been advised to rest for two to three weeks following a hip fracture on Tuesday.
His son, who is also the president of Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, said surgery was not an appropriate option due to his father's age, which has reached 100 years.
"Therefore, we have been advised by experts at the National Heart Institute (IJN) and the National University Hospital Malaysia (HUKM) for him to go through a normal recovery process, which will take some time.
"But the goal is, of course, for him to be healthy again and be able to continue working as he has been doing all this time," he said in a video on Wednesday.
The former Kedah Menteri Besar also thanked all parties who expressed their sympathy and prayed for his father's health.
"May Allah SWT grant all of our prayers, God willing. At the same time, I beg and plead with everyone, let Tun Mahathir have time to rest and fully recover.
"As I said earlier, it will take time for him to truly recover and can be with us in our struggle, God willing. Thank you all." he added.
On Tuesday, it was reported that the statesman was confirmed to have suffered a fractured right hip and is expected to be hospitalised for several weeks for treatment and further monitoring.
Tun Mahathir, 100, was admitted to the IJN at about 9.30am after reportedly falling at his residence.
His press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, had earlier informed that the statesman was taken to the IJN by ambulance and was reported to be conscious. – January 7, 2026
