We refer to our article entitled “Najib Razak files appeal against 1MDB conviction, 15-year sentence, and billions in fine", first published on 30 December 2025.

In the article, a photograph was published immediately below the headline with the caption: “Senior counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah confirms the notice of appeal was filed on the evening of Monday, 29 December - December 30, 2025.

It has since been brought to our attention that the photograph used was incorrect.

The photograph was not of senior counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah or any member of his firm.

Instead, it shows one of Liew Teck Huat, Nirumalan Kanapathi Pillay, and Phang Cunkuang.

We acknowledge that Liew, Nirumalan and Phang have had no involvement whatsoever in the defence of Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the 1MDB matter or in his appeal against conviction, and have no connection to senior counsel Muhammad Shafee.

We regret these errors and the incorrect impression that may have been conveyed by the publication of the photograph.

The photograph has been removed from the article, and we hereby unreservedly retract its use in connection with the article.

We also sincerely and unreservedly apologise to Liew, Nirumalan and Phang for the errors, annoyance, inconvenience, hurt and distress caused. – January 9, 2025
