A YOUNG woman lost her life last night when a van failed to stop at a red traffic light and collided with the motorcycle she was riding in Napoh in Jitra.
The victim, Fatin Nursyafikah Haris Bawijad, 22, from Kampung Bukit Beruas Mukim Binjal, worked as a restaurant assistant and succumbed to severe injuries at the scene.
Her body was subsequently taken to the Forensic Unit of Hospital Jitra for an autopsy.
Superintendent Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim, Chief of Kubang Pasu Police, said preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred at around 10.15pm when a 60-year-old Thai national was driving a Toyota Hiace van from Pantai Remis, Perak, en route to Satun, Thailand.
“When the van reached the Napoh traffic light, the driver failed to stop and struck a Modenas motorcycle approaching from a side junction,” he explained.
The police chief said the collision was believed to have been caused by the van driver’s negligence in ignoring the traffic signal. The driver, who entered Malaysia using a border pass, sustained no injuries and initial urine screening confirmed he was not under the influence of drugs.
“He has been detained for further investigation,” Mohd Radzi said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Authorities have emphasised the need for road users to observe traffic signals and exercise caution to prevent such fatal incidents. - January 16, 2026
