THE Selangor state government has confirmed that the closure of pig farms in Kuala Langat and neighbouring districts will be carried out as swiftly as possible this year, following recent directives from Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to review the state’s pork supply requirements.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said authorities are conducting a thorough study into local demand and supply levels to ensure any action taken does not disrupt availability or inflate market prices.
“Previously, His Majesty requested that we assess the demand. We are currently conducting that study. We aim to implement the closures this year as quickly as possible,” Amirudin said during a press conference after the launch of the second Voluntary Local Review (VLR) on the Sustainable Development Goals in Shah Alam today.
He stressed that the state must also consider alternative sources of pork, which may involve imports, but cautioned that relying heavily on external supply could drive prices sharply higher.
“We do not want prices to soar excessively. At present, around 70 per cent of pork is imported from other states and countries,” he said.
The announcement follows a decision last Monday to suspend and temporarily cancel proposals for new pig farming developments in Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor, after strong local opposition and the need for a more comprehensive review of environmental and supply impacts.
Amirudin emphasised that the final decisions on closures will be guided by the ongoing study, balancing public health, supply sufficiency, and market affordability to avoid placing undue burden on consumers. - January 29, 2026
