A FIRE broke out shortly after the breaking of fast on the first day of Ramadan, severely damaging a teachers’ residential unit and a car at the quarters of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tunku Putra in Padang Matsirat, Langkawi.

The incident, which occurred at about 7.45pm, caused substantial property damage but no injuries were reported.

Zone 4 chief of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department in Langkawi, Mohd Zamri Abd Ghani, said the department received an emergency call at 7.52pm alerting them to the blaze.

A team from the Padang Matsirat Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene, with assistance from the Langkawi Fire and Rescue Station, to carry out firefighting operations.

“The fire involved a semi-detached teachers’ quarters unit with an estimated 20 per cent damage.

“A Volkswagen Polo vehicle was also affected, sustaining nearly 90 per cent damage. The incident did not involve any casualties,” he said in a statement tonight.

He added that the fire was brought under control at 8.17pm, and operations were fully concluded at 10.01pm.

“The cause of the fire and the total losses are still under investigation,” he said. - February 20, 2026
