AUTHORITIES have launched an investigation into a social media user suspected of uploading content deemed threatening, offensive, and highly distasteful towards the Terengganu royal family.
The posts, reportedly shared via the individual’s personal account on platform X, are said to target sensitive aspects of the nation’s monarchy and touch upon the delicate intersection of race, religion, and royalty.
The Communications and Multimedia Commission of Malaysia (MCMC) described the material as containing elements of insult and threat with the potential to incite public hostility, social tension, and disruption to national peace.
To support the inquiry, the individual in question was summoned for a formal statement at the Lanchang Police Station on 21 February 2026. During the session, one mobile phone and one SIM card were seized for digital forensic analysis.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both upon conviction.
MCMC emphasised that there will be no compromise regarding any misuse of social media involving threats, hate speech, or insults directed at the Royal Institution.
“Enforcement action will be taken firmly and professionally in accordance with existing law, regardless of the background of the individual involved,” the commission stated.
The authority also reminded the public to refrain from abusing digital platforms to disseminate unlawful content.
