DAP secretary - general Anthony Loke Siew Fook has called on Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and his predecessor Lim Guan Eng to stop publicly bickering over the controversial steep hike in quit rent rates.
"Enough of the public spat, restore party discipline and focus on the rakyat," Loke said in a statement.
The DAP leadership is concerned and disturbed by the ongoing public spat between Lim and Chow regarding the new quit rent rates in Penang.
"This is an unhealthy and inappropriate way to address internal differences on public policy matters, particularly at a time when the nation is facing external geopolitical and economic uncertainties," said Loke.
Lim, as a former secretary-general of DAP and former Chief Minister of Penang, should fully appreciate the importance of party discipline.
"Any disagreements, especially from backbenchers on state government decisions, should be addressed through established internal mechanisms rather than aired publicly. Differences of opinion should not be expressed in a manner that undermines our own Chief Minister and the state government."
At the same time, while Lim’s approach is highly inappropriate, Chow, as Chief Minister, should take serious note of the concerns raised, as they involve public interest and reflect grievances from various stakeholders, he said.
"While there is a need to review quit rent rates in commercial zones to ensure the financial sustainability of the state government, the approach must be balanced, responsive, and considerate. In particular, quit rent involving educational institutions such as public schools should not be increased excessively, and a nominal rate should be applied."
This public spat must come to an end, and party discipline must be upheld at all times, said Loke.
"As the secretary-general of DAP, I will convene a meeting involving both leaders to resolve this matter amicably. Our focus must remain on serving the people and safeguarding the public interest. Party leaders must refrain from public bickering and instead work together constructively in the best interests of the Rakyat.," he said. - March 21, 2026.
