A 12-YEAR-OLD boy has died after attempting to rescue his younger brother who was swept away by strong currents in a drainage channel in Taman Ayer Keroh Heights.

The victim, Muhammad Loqman Afandy, had been playing in the water with his 10-year-old brother, Muhammad Adam Afandi, and two friends at about 4.30pm during light rain.

According to Melaka Tengah District Police Chief Christopher Patit, the younger brother is believed to have slipped and been carried away by fast-moving water, prompting the victim and another friend to attempt a rescue.

“The strong current caused all three children to be swept away, but two of them managed to save themselves.

“One of their friends, who was further away, sought help from nearby residents before an emergency call was made at 5.51pm,” he said.

Fire and rescue personnel launched a search and rescue operation upon arriving at the scene, locating the victim approximately 20 minutes later in an unconscious state.

“Emergency resuscitation (CPR) was administered by Health Ministry personnel at the scene before the victim was rushed to Hospital Melaka, but he was pronounced dead at 8.09pm while receiving treatment in the red zone.

“The body was sent to the Forensic Department of Hospital Melaka for a post-mortem, and the case has been classified as a sudden death,” he said. - April 28, 2026
