MINISTER of Works, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, has hinted that he will not defend the Kapit parliamentary seat in the upcoming General Election (GE), after almost 30 years of serving in Parliament.

Nanta, who is now 68 years old, said that the intention was to pave the way for young people to continue the party's struggle and bring new leadership to the area.

“My intention in stating this is to pave the way for young people.

“I already have a plan (next step) prepared if needed,” he said when met at the Supreme Council Meeting of the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), today.

The Secretary-General of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) did not rule out the possibility of continuing his political career at the state level if given the opportunity and with the blessing of the party leadership.

“Maybe if there is an opportunity in a new place… I would also like to serve at the state level,” he said.

He said that after almost three decades as the Member of Parliament for Kapit, it is time to consider new challenges and responsibilities in the state political arena.

“Yes, because I have been in Parliament for almost 30 years, if there is an opportunity and with the approval of the party President (Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg), I may want to continue my political career at the state level,” he said.

According to him, the matter is, however, entirely subject to the decision of the party leadership, including the party President, in determining its political direction at the time. next.

Meanwhile, he also hinted at the possibility of contesting in the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) constituency in Kapit if given the party's trust.

"It so happens that there is a new DUN seat there (re-demarcation)," he said, stressing that he remains committed to continuing to serve the people wherever he is placed.

Nanta, who is the grandson of the great leader of the Dayak community, Tun Temenggong Jugah Barieng, has been the Member of Parliament for Kapit for 27 years since 1999.

He held the constituency for six terms, including winning uncontested in GE-11 and GE-12.

He joined the Federal Cabinet as Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development in 2013.

In 2021, he was appointed Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.

He was then appointed Minister of Works in December 2022 until now.

He also served as the Acting Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development for two weeks from December 3 to December 16, 2025. – May 9, 2026
