Rumours of Johor DUN dissolution rife as MB scheduled to hold press conference this evening
The Election Commission (EC) has up to 60 days after the dissolution of the State Assembly to hold a state election - June 1, 2026

MENTERI Besar Johor, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, is scheduled to hold a special press conference at his official residence in Saujana, here, at 5 pm today.

An invitation to the media to cover the press conference was distributed today, but further details on what will be announced were not disclosed.

This has strengthened rumours that Onn Hafiz will announce the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) this evening.

The development has sparked attention from various quarters as the Johor State Assembly is expected to be automatically dissolved on 21 April 2027 if it is not dissolved earlier.

According to legal provisions, the Election Commission (EC) has up to 60 days after the dissolution of the State Assembly to hold a state election.

This means that the 16th Johor State Assembly must be held no later than around June 2027 if the dissolution occurs automatically.

In the 15th Johor State Assembly, which took place in March 2022, Barisan Nasional (BN) formed the state government after winning 40 of the 56 contested State Assembly seats.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 12 seats with DAP securing 10 seats, while PKR and Amanah each won one seat.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) won three seats, while MUDA secured one seat. – June 1, 2026
