KUALA LUMPUR – Enraged Malaysians have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the Public Works Department following the death of a 75-year-old man, who died after hitting a pothole at Jalan Tengah, near the Mid Valley Megamall yesterday.
The death of Ho Yan Yee prompted netizens to bombard the department’s Twitter account, @JKRMalaysia, calling for an apology, while questioning its efficiency in dealing with road conditions.
Sharing a news article on the incident, Twitter user @StephenZth said: “Where is @JKRMalaysia now? Not bothered if it involves the rakyat? Double standards till death!”
Twitter user @sharafirozi wrote: “@Khairykj fell and slightly hurt his face prompted @JKRMalaysia to apologise, but with this death are you going to remain mum? Double standards between the people and a minister?”
Another user @khaspg tweeted: “Why did it have to happen… Is there no surveillance @JKRMalaysia?”
Twitter user @ArifSetia2013rd called on the department to apologise to all Malaysians, as well as compensate families whose members have lost their lives following incidents due to pothole-filled roads.
The pothole issue made headlines recently after Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin suffered injuries to the face after falling while cycling in Jalan Kg Seri Cheeding, Banting, a week ago.
He landed in a ditch after his bicycle hit a pothole.
His accident and subsequent tweet saw a swift response and apology from the Kuala Langat Public Works Department, with the pothole in question being filled up a day later.
