A FIGHTER jet was reported to have made an emergency landing at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) last night.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) F/A-18D fighter jet is believed to have experienced a technical problem involving the left engine or 'left engine flame out' before successfully landing safely at 7.47 pm.

It is understood that the jet was then parked at Terminal 2 of KKIA for further action.

The condition of the fighter jet was reported to be good, and several engineers were seen next to the aircraft immediately after landing to carry out further inspections.

Earlier, a loud bang was heard in several areas around Sepanggar and Kota Kinabalu, sparking questions among the public, with some sharing their experiences on social media.

It is understood that the fighter jet remains in the KKIA Terminal 2 area.

So far, no official statement has been issued by the RMAF regarding the incident. – May 20, 2026
