Selangor Ruler warns political infighting weakening Malays and Muslims
The Sultan of Selangor issued a strong appeal for unity among Malays and Muslims stating a strong and united society would contribute to a more peaceful, stable and respectful nation - May 21, 2026

SULTAN of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed concern over increasingly frequent disputes among political leaders, saying such tensions were causing unease among the rakyat and undermining communal strength.

“If we continue to divide and quarrel among ourselves, then we will be the ones who suffer losses and become weak.

“All parties should take lessons from history when divisions among Malays and Muslims opened opportunities for outsiders to take advantage and weaken the power and position of the Malay community in its own homeland,” the Sultan said in his 2026 Aidiladha message, today

The Selangor ruler stressed that the ongoing internal conflict must come to an end, cautioning that prolonged disunity would only diminish the influence and resilience of Malays and Muslims in the country.

At the same time, the Sultan emphasised that calls for Malay unity should not be misinterpreted as hostility towards other ethnic communities in Malaysia.

Instead, he said, a strong and united society would contribute to a more peaceful, stable and respectful nation where citizens from different backgrounds could coexist harmoniously.

The ruler also called on Malaysians of all races and faiths to continue respecting each other’s sensitivities and preserve the spirit of peaceful coexistence that underpins the country’s social fabric.

Reflecting on the significance of Aidiladha, the Sultan said the celebration carried profound lessons about sacrifice, sincerity and the unity of the ummah, as demonstrated by millions of Muslims gathering in the Holy Land regardless of status, ethnicity or social standing.

“On the occasion of Aidiladha, Beta also hopes that all races, ethnic groups and followers of all religions in this country will continue to respect one another’s sensitivities and live peacefully together.

“History has proven that Islamic civilisation once achieved a golden age during the Ottoman Empire when multi-ethnic societies lived harmoniously under Islamic governance,” the Sultan said.

The Sultan and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor also prayed for Malaysian hajj pilgrims to be granted ease in performing their religious obligations and to attain a blessed and accepted pilgrimage. - May 21, 2026
