THE magistrate’s court in Sungai Petani today rejected a remand application for the 49-year-old lorry driver involved in the accident that claimed six lives in Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal on Sunday

The investigation into the accident case is being conducted under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Kedah Police Chief, Datuk Adzli Abu Shah, previously announced that the driver tested negative for drugs.

However, a check found that the man had seven summonses, including four that were still pending.

"However, he had a valid driving licence and the speed of the lorry at the time of the incident was only 60 kilometres per hour," he said.

According to Adzli, the police are investigating all aspects to identify the exact cause of the accident that claimed six lives.

The Proton X50 sport utility vehicle (SUV) that the six victims were travelling in was a new vehicle that was taken from a dealership a few hours before the incident.

In the incident, the SUV involved, which was travelling from Pinang Tunggal towards Sungai Petani, reportedly collided with a tipper truck from the opposite direction, resulting in six deaths and a three-year-old girl being seriously injured. – June 8, 2026
