MALAYSIA continues to strengthen efforts to secure energy supply through strategic cooperation with oil and gas-producing countries, following the increasingly challenging global geopolitical uncertainties.
Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said the issue of energy security is now one of the world's major challenges, following the conflicts in several regions, including West Asia, which affect the international energy supply chain.
He said that the government always takes proactive steps to ensure the country's energy supply remains stable and does not burden the people despite facing global economic pressures.
“In a world facing an uncertain energy supply, the government needs to ensure that the people do not bear excessive burdens.
“Therefore, we are working to guarantee the country’s energy supply while maintaining price stability for those in need,” he said when speaking at the Sabah Southern Madani Link (SSML) launching ceremony in Sipitang, today, also attended by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
Anwar said the conflict that broke out in West Asia also raised concerns about the security of the world’s energy supply, including the possibility of disruption to trade routes and the delivery of major energy resources.
According to him, Malaysia is fortunate to have good relations with various countries that enable efforts to obtain energy resources to be implemented more effectively.
“The good relations established with various countries, including Russia, provide space for Malaysia to obtain the necessary cooperation in the energy sector, especially to ensure that the country’s supply continues to be secure,” he added.
He is scheduled to visit Russia and Turkmenistan next week in an effort to strengthen energy cooperation between Malaysia and the two countries.
He said that Turkmenistan, which has some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, has shown its willingness to expand cooperation with Malaysia through its national oil company, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS).
“Malaysia takes a neutral and friendly approach to all countries. This approach not only strengthens diplomatic relations, but also opens up opportunities for strategic cooperation, including in the energy sector, for the benefit of the people and national development,” he said. – June 13, 2026
