THE media must continue to uphold journalistic ethics and play a role in delivering accurate information to ensure national stability and strengthen the democratic system.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the distribution of accurate information will provide space and influence on decisions in determining the future.
According to him, media freedom cannot be separated from values and ethics because the delivery of responsible information is the basis for shaping public perception and national development.
“The era of Socrates proved that unlimited freedom can threaten democracy if not guided by the principles of truth and professionalism.
“Because no matter how true the statement ‘defend the rights and freedoms of Socrates’ is, or how true those who oppose it are, because for them the issue of national security, the integrity of the system, is more important than individual freedom, there are two truths.
“But the truth will be punished and the value based on the information distributed,” he said when speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the HAWANA 2026 Celebration Summit in Butterworth, this evening.
In a related development, he said Malaysia remained committed to strengthening strategic relations with Russia after its President, Vladimir Putin, agreed to implement a long-term agreement to guarantee energy supplies to the country.
He said that the commitment shown by Russia was based on trust and a record of consistent implementation of promises, thus giving confidence in the long-standing bilateral relationship.
"It is very comforting because that is what we have to face, which is challenging and new," he added.
Earlier, Anwar said the government has allocated RM1 million to Tabung Kasih@Hawana 2026 and will continue supporting initiatives aimed at transforming the media industry.
He said the contribution reflected the government's appreciation for media practitioners and its commitment to their welfare. – June 20, 2026
