A WEAK magnitude 3.3 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Batu Pahat early on Sunday, extending a series of minor seismic events that have increasingly affected the Johor district in recent months.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the earthquake occurred at 1.17am, with its epicentre located approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Batu Pahat at coordinates 1.7 degrees North and 102.7 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

“A weak earthquake was recorded at 1.17am, and tremors may have been felt in parts of Johor. MetMalaysia will continue to monitor the situation,” MetMalaysia said in a Facebook post.

The department said tremors may have been felt in parts of Johor but did not report any immediate damage or casualties.

The latest earthquake is the fifth to be recorded in the Batu Pahat area, following the previous tremor on March 14, when a magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck the same offshore region, underscoring a pattern of recurring low-magnitude seismic activity being closely monitored by the national weather agency. - June 21, 2026
