A SECURITY guard was sentenced to eight months in jail and fined RM50,000 by the Sessions Court in Kuching today after pleading guilty to posting offensive remarks about the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Facebook.
Judge Iris Awen Jon handed down the sentence to Raden Mohamad Norhakim Raden Ibrahim, 46, and ordered an additional two months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
According to the charge, the accused had made a comment deemed offensive with the intent to hurt others through a Facebook post on February 12 last year.
The post was later detected by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at its Cyberjaya office at 8.44pm on the same day.
He was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
In delivering the sentence, the court stressed that the offence carried wider implications, particularly as it involved remarks directed at the King and was made in the comment section of a mainstream news outlet.
“Public interest is the court’s primary consideration in this case. You must apologise to all Malaysians and to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. There is no point apologising to me — the damage has already been done,” the judge said.
The prosecution was led by MCMC prosecuting officer Nazrul Nizam Mohd Zameri, while the accused was not represented by counsel. - June 24, 2026
