JELUTONG MP RSN Rayer has praised Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for engaging with DAP lawmakers in discussions on legislation affecting the public, saying the move reflected a willingness to put national interests ahead of political differences.
Speaking during the debate on the Cyber Crime Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat today, Rayer said many DAP MPs attended a briefing on the proposed amendments delivered by Zahid, who is also UMNO president, and subsequently backed the legislation.
“I would like to thank the Deputy Prime Minister. I was present during the briefing, and many DAP MPs attended to show their support,” he said.
Rayer added that while there were parties unwilling to sit at the same table with DAP, Zahid had been prepared to engage directly with all lawmakers and explain the proposed amendments.
“He was gracious enough to brief us, and many of us stood up to support the Bill,” he said.
His remarks come days after Johor Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi ruled out any cooperation with DAP in the state, saying he would rather relinquish his post as menteri besar than lead an administration involving the party after the upcoming Johor state election.
Onn Hafiz argued that Johor’s political landscape differs from the federal level, where Barisan Nasional and DAP are partners in the unity government, noting that UMNO and DAP have never worked together politically in the state. – July 1, 2026
