PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the importance of stronger cooperation between the Federal Government and state governments in driving Malaysia's climate change agenda, saying closer collaboration is vital to ensure environmental policies are implemented effectively and inclusively nationwide.
Chairing the first meeting of the National Climate Change Action Council (MTPIN) for 2026, Anwar said the council reviewed progress on key initiatives aimed at reinforcing Malaysia's commitment to addressing climate change in accordance with the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Anwar said comprehensive engagement with state governments must remain a priority to ensure climate policies and long-term strategies are developed through a collaborative approach that respects the constitutional roles and responsibilities of both the Federal and state governments.
"I also stressed the importance of more comprehensive engagement with the State Governments so that every policy and strategy is formulated in an inclusive manner."
"(This is) in line with the spirit of the Federal Constitution while respecting the jurisdiction and role of the states," he said.
Anwar said the MADANI Government remains firmly committed to ensuring that Malaysia's national development agenda progresses in tandem with environmental conservation efforts to secure a more sustainable future for generations to come.
He added that effective coordination between all levels of government will be critical in translating national climate commitments into practical action while strengthening Malaysia's resilience against the growing challenges posed by climate change. - July 8, 2026
