AUTHORITIES are reviewing security footage and baggage screening records at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as investigations widen into a Malaysia Airlines pilot who was allegedly arrested in Indonesia for attempting to smuggle drugs worth an estimated RM45 million.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said police had received official information from Indonesian authorities and had opened an investigation in Malaysia to determine the full extent of the case.
He said investigators were focusing on identifying the source of the drugs, individuals who may have directed the alleged operation and whether an organised syndicate had used aviation routes to facilitate trafficking activities.
“We will investigate the possibility of a syndicate network using flights or air routes to smuggle drugs in connection with this case.
“The suspect was also reported to have carried out similar activities using the same modus operandi previously. Therefore, we will review CCTV recordings at KLIA and baggage scanner images to assist the investigation,” he told Berita Harian.
Hussein also warned the public against accepting suspicious offers to transport goods in exchange for attractive payments, saying such tactics were commonly used by drug syndicates to exploit individuals.
“Members of the public are advised to be more aware and careful so they do not fall victim to syndicates’ tactics and become tools for drug smuggling activities,” he said.
The 39-year-old Malaysia Airlines pilot was reportedly detained by Indonesian authorities at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after allegedly attempting to bring 25kg of drugs into the country.
Indonesia’s National Police (POLRI) said officers discovered 15 packages containing 70,114 ecstasy capsules and methamphetamine, with the drugs estimated to be worth RM45 million based on Indonesian market prices.
The suspect allegedly received RM50,000 to transport the consignment from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta, where it was intended to be collected by another individual at his hotel.
Indonesian authorities said the suspect had allegedly admitted to previous drug delivery activities involving Jakarta and Sabah, while investigations continue to uncover the wider network believed to be operating across Malaysia and Indonesia.
Malaysia Airlines said it was cooperating fully with Indonesian authorities and had initiated an internal review following the incident.
The airline stressed that it maintains a zero-tolerance approach towards misconduct, with safety, security and operational integrity remaining its highest priorities.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said any decision regarding the suspension or cancellation of the pilot’s licence would be considered under the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, based on the outcome of investigations by the relevant authorities.
The case has heightened concerns over the possible exploitation of aviation-related access and privileges by international drug trafficking networks, as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to identify the alleged masterminds and dismantle the wider syndicate. - August 1, 2026
