HAZE has pushed air quality in Alor Setar and Sungai Petani into the unhealthy range, prompting health authorities to urge residents to reduce outdoor exposure and take precautions against potential health effects.

As of 3pm, Alor Setar recorded an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 152, while Sungai Petani registered 155, according to data from the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS).

Both readings fall within the unhealthy category of between 101 and 200.

Langkawi and Kulim Hi-Tech, meanwhile, recorded moderate air quality, with readings of 84 and 91 respectively.

The Kedah State Health Department advised residents to reduce the duration and intensity of strenuous outdoor activities while air quality remains unhealthy.

It said children, older people and those with heart or respiratory conditions should exercise particular caution as they are more vulnerable to the effects of polluted air.

"When the reading is at the unhealthy level of 101 to 200, high-risk groups such as children, the elderly and individuals with heart disease or respiratory problems need to be more cautious.

"Limit outdoor activities and use appropriate respiratory protection when necessary outdoors, drink sufficient water, avoid smoking and stay away from areas with smoke or pollution," it said in a statement posted on Facebook.

The department also advised vulnerable individuals to seek medical attention at the nearest health facility if they experience coughing, breathing difficulties, irritated or watery eyes, chest pain or worsening symptoms.

The impact of the haze was also apparent in Alor Setar, where hazy conditions reduced visibility in open areas and prompted residents to cut back on outdoor activities.

For people whose work requires them to remain outdoors, however, avoiding exposure is not always possible.

Food delivery worker Fatin Norshalihah Azman, 30, said the deteriorating air quality had made working outdoors increasingly uncomfortable.

"My eyes feel irritated and breathing also feels uncomfortable. Visibility also appears hazy because of the smoke.

"I have a sore throat, so after completing the food deliveries ordered by customers, I go straight home. I usually jog from 5pm until later in the evening, but now I exercise indoors," she said.

The unhealthy readings underscore the need for residents to monitor air quality closely, particularly as prolonged exposure can pose greater risks to vulnerable groups and those who spend extended periods outdoors. - August 24, 2026
