KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 2,433 fresh Covid-19 cases and nine deaths today (December 10), pushing the cumulative cases to 135,992.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the death toll now stands at 551 cases since the pandemic started.

A total of 171 individuals are under intensive care, with 76 requiring ventilators.

He said the total number of active cases stands at 27,332. From today’s new infections, Dr Noor Hisham said seven are imported.

The country also registered 1,277 recoveries, bringing the total to 108,109, or 79.5% of overall infections.

Selangor saw the highest number of cases among all states at 730, of which 510 are from active clusters and close contact screenings. Selangor is followed by Sabah with 403 cases and Johor with 321.

The next highest for today was recorded in Penang (189 cases), followed by Negeri Sembilan (144), Kelantan (103), Perak (80), Kedah (71), Pahang (41), Melaka (35), Terengganu (29), Sarawak (24), Labuan (17), Putrajaya (10), and Perlis (5).

Five of today’s deaths occurred in Selangor, involving four men and a woman – all locals aged between 51 to 78.

Kuala Lumpur recorded three deaths involving two foreign men, aged 37 and 60, as well as a 94-year-old woman. All three died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Sabah recorded the death of an 83-year-old local woman at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

Dr Noor Hisham said 86 cases today were related to clusters from lockups, immigration detention centres, and prisons consisting of the Jalan Harapan Prison cluster (79 cases), Pagar Siput cluster (3 cases), Seberang Perai Prison cluster (three cases) and Tembok Choh cluster (1 case).

Dr Noor Hisham said the country had seen 586 clusters in total, including five new clusters reported just today. He said 332 clusters have ended, including seven consisting of the Bandar Impian, Indah Mas, Kubota, Batu Tiga, Rumah Merah, Seri Jujur and PTS Sebunga clusters.

Of the active clusters, 65 reported additional cases with the highest being the Jalan Harapan Prison (79 cases), Rawa Akasia (73 cases), and Beringin (65 cases) clusters.

The five new clusters are the Cyber construction site cluster involving the Sepang, Petaling, Klang and Hulu Langat districts in Selangor with 67 cases, and the Texmile cluster in the Gombak district in Selangor with 19 cases.

The Jalan Sibunga cluster in Sandakan, Sabah found nine cases, and the Alor Durian cluster in Tumpat and Kota Baru in Kelantan saw 17 cases detected, while the Wakaf Lanas cluster in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan had seen 11 infections so far. – The Vibes, January 10, 2021
