KOTA KINABALU – The number of evacuees displaced by flooding in several Sabah districts has reduced from close to 2,000 people on Tuesday to 966 people as of noon today.
The secretariat of the Sabah state disaster management committee said that from six affected districts in Sabah, a total of 340 families have been placed to 11 evacuation centres.
The six districts are Kota Marudu (651 evacuees), Pitas (145), Beaufort (24), Lahad Datu (28), Paitan (45) and Kudat (73).
The continuous heavy rains have hit Kota Marudu this time, affecting 20 villages, with 262 families moved to four evacuation centres, namely Kg Asin-Asin hall, SK Taritipan, SK Advent Damai, and SMK Tandek.
The Malaysia Meteorological Department forecasts strong winds of 50 to 60 kph, with high tides reaching up to 4.5m in the west coast of Sabah and Labuan until Saturday (January 16).
The committee said it is constantly monitoring the flood situation in Sabah caused by unusually high tides and constant heavy rains, and advised public members to stay alert and move to safer grounds when floods hit their areas. – The Vibes, January 14, 2021
