KUALA LUMPUR – Petaling Jaya police have mounted at least four roadblocks and five road closures to enforce the movement control order in the city, said district police chief Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal.
He said the closures involved roads coming into the city from Sg Buloh, Gombak, and Shah Alam.
“We made the decision to close the roads based on necessity,” he said today while visiting a road block set up along the Damansara toll plaza.
However, he said vehicles of frontliners and enforcers such as ambulances, Fire and Rescue Department, police, and municipal councils are allowed to pass through the roadblocks.
Nik Ezanee said 596 officers and personnel are on duty as of today.
The number of policemen on duty, he said, included compliance officers set to issue compounds to violators of standard operating procedures.
He added that the public’s level of compliance can be assessed in the next three or four days, as traffic is low over the weekend.
Nik Ezanee said many travellers had presented their authorisation letters to police, based on his observations.
“We also advised them that if there is no need to travel they should stay at home, even if they have letters,” he said.
Nik Ezanee said police had asked several motorists to turn back at the roadblocks because there were some who merely wanted to buy food in other areas such as Shah Alam and Brickfields.
“If there is a need to buy food, do so at nearby areas. Do not come from Sierramas or Shah Alam to PJ to buy food.
“Even if the government has allowed travel within 10km, travel responsibly. Frontliners cannot move alone (in combating Covid-19). Doctors, police, and enforcers cannot do this alone. We need cooperation from all layers of the community.”
Nik Ezanee said there were many who travelled to the city to work as Petaling Jaya is a commercial area.
However, he added that his department received numerous complaints from the staff of non-essential sectors who were asked to go to their workplaces in Petaling Jaya.
