KOTA KINABALU – Politics in Sabah appears to have taken the backseat for now as parties set aside their rivalries and hit the ground to help victims severely affected by floods in the state.
Cleaning works and delivering aid seems to be the order of the day for most party workers when the heavy rains ended yesterday.
For Sabah DAP, cleaning works began at Buhavan Square in Penampang, on ordinary days a popular hotspot for many in the KadazanDusun heartland.
The party’s Youth members were seen cleaning up mud and debris left behind from recent floods in the district.
The “Broom Army”, as they are called, also cleaned St Michael Secondary School and the Kg Tunoh Community Centre today.
The party’s volunteers had also lent a hand in cleaning up the mess left behind following inundation last year.
The group undertook the work with the help of local council cleaners.
Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) workers, meanwhile, were seen handing out food baskets to nine families stranded in Signal Hill near here.
The families were left stranded in their homes after recent heavy rains caused landslides and cut off road access and communication.
Most of Sabah's west coast areas have experienced heavy rainfall over the past week, causing floods in nine Sabah districts, including here, in Penampang and Beaufort.
In Beaufort, Wanita Umno began distributing aid, with volunteers sending food baskets to the needy in the southwestern district. – The Vibes, January 20, 2021
