KOTA KINABALU – One can still die from Covid-19 even without any history of critical illness, said Sabah Covid-19 spokesman, Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.
Although most of the Covid-19 deaths are linked with a history of critical illnesses, Masidi said this must not be misunderstood.
“Sabah has recorded 307 deaths from Covid-19 to date, of which the 61 to 70 years old age group recorded the highest death rate at 94 people.
This is followed by the age groups of 51 to 60 (66 deaths), 71 to 80 (56 deaths), 21 to 50 (46 deaths), 81 to 90 (32 deaths), under 20 years old (7 deaths), and over 91 years old (6 deaths).
Masidi also said out of the total Covid-19-related deaths in Sabah, 131 were from ICU wards, 54 from isolation wards or emergency unit, while 122 cases died outside the hospital.
“Most of them had a history of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, lung disease and kidney problems,” he said.
Masidi said this during his live online daily briefing on Covid-19 cases in Sabah today.
On another note, following reports that certain massage centres are still opened during the movement control order (MCO) period, Masidi clarified that centres and parlours providing massage service are not allowed to open.
He asked for members of the public to report such centres to authorities if they are found to be operating.
“Please learn to massage your feet, or whatever part that you want to massage at home.
Massage centres are not allowed to open,” he said, adding that massage centres could not be allowed to open because it is not an essential service, and physical contact could not be avoided in its operation.
He said jewellery shops and goldsmiths are, however, allowed to open because they fall under the trading and distribution sector.
The sale of gold and jewellery via online could be controlled and they could regulate and limit the number of customers into the shop and avoid physical contact,” he said.
Masidi said that the decision on which services could be opened during the MCO was made by the International Trade and Industry Ministry and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry. 38 services have been allowed to operate.
Sabah recorded 453 new Covid-19 cases today, with the highest from Tawau (64), followed by Lahad Datu and Kota Kinabalu (52 each), and Kinabatangan (39).
Three Covid-19 deaths were recorded in the state today, one each in Sandakan, Kinabatangan and Lahad Datu. –The Vibes, January 22, 2021.
