GEORGE TOWN – Penang Hindu Association (PHA) yesterday continued its tradition of distributing food to the poor and elderly to mark the Thaipusam festival.

Association members provided vegetarian food to the hardcore poor at the Rifle Range Flats in Air Itam and the infirmed at the Little Sisters of the Poor here.

“We served items such as chapati, vegetable kurma and Kerala payasam to some 85 residents at the elderly home and 100 packets of vegetarian food to the poor.

“Although public celebrations for Thaipusam are cancelled in Penang, the PHA wants to continue our charity work.”

Association president P. Murugiah said the PHA has been providing free food during the three-day Thaipusam festival for the last 10 years.

He added that the PHA also provides food for the poor on Pournami or full moon days as its commitment to society.
