KOTA KINABALU – All five computer shops in Kota Kinabalu inspected by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry were issued with compounds for raising the prices of electronic appliances needed for online class.
Its state director, Georgie Abas, in a statement today said the ministry’s enforcement unit on Monday inspected five computer shops, of which all were suspected to have raised the prices of computers, laptops, printers and smart phones to take advantage of the e-learning requirement.
“The operation was conducted to ensure that prices of the mentioned gadgets remain standard, as many parents need to purchase them for their children’s online education.
“We have started inspecting business premises selling appliances, such as laptops, computers, printers and smartphones, as we found that demand for these items, especially laptops and printers, have increased recently.”
“All five premises issued with compounds are given two days to submit a detailed cost and sales prices for further investigation,” he said, adding that the operation will continue until February 8.
He said individuals found guilty of intentionally raising the prices of the gadgets mentioned will face action under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which carries a punishment of up to RM100,000 fine, or maximum imprisonment of three years, or both.
Any corporation convicted under the act will be fined up to RM500,000. – The Vibes, January 29, 2021
