KUALA LUMPUR – The National Security Council (NSC) will consider proposals to change Chinese New Year standard operating procedures (SOPs) submitted by the National Unity Ministry.
The council has been lambasted by large segments of the public and politicians over its confusing guidelines for the upcoming festivities.
In a statement today, Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the National Unity Ministry had consulted various stakeholders, including 21 religious associations, cultural groups and Chinese business associations before submitting its proposal to the NSC.
“This is why it is strange that the SOPs for Chinese New Year had received harsh criticism from the public.
“However, if there are any changes from the ministry after considering public opinion, it can table a new proposal for the NSC to consider,” said Ismail Sabri.
One of the earliest Chinese leaders who panned the SOPs was Deputy National Unity Minister Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker who called for its rectification in a Facebook post yesterday.
The SOPs were also added to comedian Dr Jason Leong’s repertoire of jokes on his Twitter page.
“So, during this MCO, I cannot visit my parents for CNY as we live in different houses, but it’s okay. My family and extended relatives are all meeting up to at least say ‘Hi’ and exchange angpows.
“At the nearest pasar malam.”
Ismail Sabri said all non-Muslim celebrations were the result of the ministry’s proposals to NSC.
He added that the SOPs for Thaipusam, Deepavali, Christmas, Gawai and Kaamatan went through the same procedure. – The Vibes, February 5, 2021
