KEPALA BATAS – Their idea to help the underprivileged came about three years ago when Saad Yaacob, 64, and his wife Robiah Che Mat, 63, were gathering items to bring to a mosque for donation.
They did not expect that all the donations would be taken up in less than two hours, underscoring the number of underprivileged folk in that area.
This prompted the couple to establish Infaq Mall in the compound of the Permatang Rambai mosque in Penaga here.
“That incident strengthened our resolve to start Infaq Mall to enable anyone to send in used goods for those in need.
“We are very grateful that it has received strong support from the mosque committee, which contributed some funds to aid our project,” Saad told Getaran.
However, he admitted that the current movement control order (MCO) has hampered their regular activities.
Although the MCO and emergency do not disallow people to donate items, Infaq Mall has to stay shut as part of the standard operating procedures.
“For now, my wife and I are assisted by 18 volunteers to help sell the clothes we received to vendors looking for pre-loved items.
“We will use the sales proceeds to buy essential items for those in need. I am grateful that the MCO does not stop people from donating and helping others.
Saad, who is a father of three, also placed about 100 articles of clothing outside the premises for people to take.
He added that Infaq Mall is involved in helping flood and fire victims, as well as participating in a civil society group programme known as Free Market.
