KUALA LUMPUR – Netizens in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur dominated the number of tweets related to the #KitaMintaLima (We Ask For Five) movement between February 5 and 7, said Politweet.

The independent research firm, which monitors sociopolitical activities on social media, found that Twitter users who used the hashtag in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur accounted for nearly half, or 46.89%, of overall related tweets nationwide.

The figures were based on a collection of 73,451 tweets from 30,651 users who mentioned #KitaMintaLima over the three days, with such tweets coming from mostly urban or more developed states.

The second-highest state is Johor with 10.96%, followed by Perak with 6.80% and Pahang with 5.02%.

Users in Kedah, Melaka and Negri Sembilan made up 4.95%, 4.31% and 4.30% of the overall related tweets, respectively, while Penang accounted for 3.53%.

Labuan had the smallest share of overall tweets on #KitaMintaLima, accounting for only 0.19%.

Yesterday, Politweet shared the figures in a table that accompanied an intricate network graph showing “how #KitaMintaLima users from February 5-7 were connected through retweets and mentions”.

The table featured two columns showing the percentage of #KitaMintaLima posts by state over the three days, and a National Distribution column showing the distribution by state for all Malaysian Twitter users as of last September.

“This table shows the distribution of #KitaMintaLima users by state, based on profile matches with our current user database,” read the tweet on the table.

“Compare it with the national distribution of users to see how close the user base came to being fairly balanced.”

Politweet added that user @Muhammad_Alias was the first to mention the #KitaMintaLima hashtag.

The firm also shared another network graph showing the top influencers for #KitaMintaLima, including @injangnation, @jalalmisai_2 and @syahredzan.

The hashtag began trending on February 5, imploring the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to grant five public interest requests amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The requests are: a targeted movement control order (MCO), full support for frontliners in terms of resources to tackle the pandemic, an automatic loan moratorium throughout the MCO, fair and just enforcement of standard operating procedures, and immediate distribution of internet data and electronic devices to all students.

The movement, which listed the demands on a poster, also called for a change of government if the requests are not met. – The Vibes, February 10, 2021
