GEORGE TOWN – Do not feel despondent about not being able to celebrate the traditional reunion dinner with loved ones as the sacrifice is for the sake of a better future, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Speaking at the virtual Lunar New Year gathering at the Chinese Consulate-General’s office in Penang here, Chow today said that he hopes everyone will exercise patience and stay home this year.
“For us to successfully break the Covid-19 infection chain, the country needs a high degree of cooperation from the people.
“Like what I have said before, the virus is at our doorstep, and as long as we remain indoors, we won’t be infected. This year’s Chinese New Year will be different.
“Perhaps some of you might not be able to have a proper reunion with your loved ones to celebrate but, for the sake of a better future, I hope everyone can remain patient and spend the festive season where you are.

“Through our joint efforts, let’s work towards achieving single-digit (daily virus cases) or even better, zero infection cases in the state.”
Chow said it was good that, even despite the pandemic, the state and China dignitaries can still usher in the Lunar New Year together, albeit virtually.
“Last year, around the same date, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, we were gathered together to welcome the arrival of the Chinese new year.
“This, however, cannot be done this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While we can’t have an actual physical get-together, I am still happy that using the online platform, members of the diplomatic corps can still have a virtual reunion.”
“Despite such an arrangement, the bond of our friendship will not be affected in any way.
“Our two nations – Malaysia and China – have enjoyed close and time-tested friendship and diplomatic ties since 1974, especially in the areas of trade, cultural exchange, education and tourism.”
Chow said he hopes once the pandemic ends, economic cooperation between Penang and China will resume and return to pre-Covid levels. – The Vibes, February 11, 2021
