KOTA BARU – The Sugarbook app, allegedly used by tertiary institution students to look for “sugar daddies”, should be blocked, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Ahmad Marzuk Shaary.
He said the government should take stern action against those involved, especially those behind the creation of the app.
“This is something that is very sad for us. The application should be prevented from being used in our country as it encourages people to do things that are not right and violate the law, including shariah law.”
He said this after presenting Musa’adah Covid-19 Fund contributions to more than 80 taxi drivers at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Pengkalan Chepa, here, today.
It was reported that an increasing number of public and private university students have been using the app to look for sugar daddies in a bid to earn easy money.
Sugarbook is also said to be the largest sugar daddy-sugar baby dating service in Asia.
Marzuk said, however, his department will leave the matter to be investigated by the Higher Education Ministry and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Earlier, National Students Consultative Council president Muhammad Amir Asyraf Mohd Sabri had said 12,705 tertiary institution students are registered with the Sugarbook app.
He also said the app has seen a more than 40% increase in new users in recent months. – Bernama, February 14, 2021
