KUALA LUMPUR – Sugarbook founder Chan Eu Boon today claimed trial after pleading not guilty to making misleading statements with the intention to cause public mischief as he was charged at the Shah Alam magistrates’ court.
Chan faces one charge under Section 505 (B) of the Penal Code and accused of publishing a post titled Top 10 Sugar Baby Universities in Malaysia via a website called Technave.
If found guilty, he faces a maximum two years’ jail or a fine, or both.
He has been granted a RM10,000 bail with one surety and is expected to be back in court on March 26 for the next mention.
He is represented by lawyer T. Shashi Dewan, Foong Cheng Leong and Low Li Qun. Deputy public prosecutor Aliff Asraf Anuar Shahruddin appeared for the prosecution.
The investigation into Chan and his controversial dating platform started after the article made headlines.
Sugarbook is being investigated under four laws, namely Section 505 of the Penal Code (statements conducing to public mischief), Section 372 (1) (D) of the Penal Code (exploiting any person for purposes of prostitution), Section 372B of the Penal Code (soliciting for purposes of prostitution) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (improper use of network facilities or network services).
Chan has been in remand since February 19 after being rearrested in connection with a rape case and for offering sex services in 2019.
Although the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission ordered the Sugarbook app and website be blocked, the website developer has since set up a mirror site in its place. – The Vibes, February 24, 2021
