KUALA LUMPUR – Police will take action against those responsible for the odour pollution at the two water treatment plants in Sg Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi, which resulted in the plants' closure yesterday.

Selangor deputy police chief Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamed said police would let the Environmental Department conduct investigations first.

He said although the two water treatment plants are located in Selangor, preliminary investigations found that the pollution originated from upstream of Sg Semenyih in Negeri Sembilan.

"As such, we will wait and see who is really responsible and, if the source of the pollution is in Negeri Sembilan, then police from that state will form a special team to handle the incident," he told Bernama today.

According to Arjunaidi, police would not intensify patrols at the plants or dam areas, as these locations already have their own enforcement and the pollution did not occur there.

Bernama had previously reported that the Sg Semenyih pollution, which caused the water plants' shutdown since 4.30pm yesterday, is believed to have originated from the Nilai Industrial Park and major cleaning works conducted at a duck and geese farm in Sungai Pajam, with both areas situated in Negeri Sembilan.

The incident caused unscheduled water disruptions at 274 areas, affecting 309,687 account holders in Selangor, namely in the Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang districts. As of 12.30pm today, the plants were still not operational. – Bernama, October 5, 2020
