THREE policemen who died from electrocution in Jalan Weston, Kampung Weston, Beaufort, today, are believed to be retrieving coconuts with an iron pole before it hit an electric cable.

The incident at 5.50 pm occurred when the iron pole used by one of the policemen suddenly lost its balance and hit an electric cable above.

Two other policemen who were nearby then tried to help the victim, but were also electrocuted before all three collapsed.

The victims were personnel from the Weston Police Station, namely Corporal Chiu Teck Siong, 40; Constable Mohamad Nur Hafiz Ibrahim, 29; and Constable Muhammad Raimi Ismarubee, 26.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said initial investigations found that the three officers involved had gone to collect coconuts before the incident occurred.

“While using a long iron pole, the tool is believed to have lost its balance and hit an electric cable.

“Two other members tried to help their friend, but were also electrocuted,” he said.

He said the three victims were confirmed dead at the scene before their bodies were taken to Beaufort Hospital for further action.

He said the police had opened an investigation paper to identify the exact cause of the incident, while a post-mortem would be conducted before the bodies were handed over to the next of kin.

Earlier, the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre received an emergency call at 5.56 pm, before seven members from the Beaufort Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) were rushed to the location. – August 6, 2026
