KUALA LUMPUR – The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry is monitoring the local egg supply following Singapore’s move to recall the product from some Malaysian producers.
This comes after the recall of Malaysian-produced eggs from several producers in recent weeks by the Singapore Food Agency after they were found with Salmonella Enteritidis (SE).
“The intention of monitoring is to ensure the egg supply is not affected following the move to recall the supply of the eggs,” it said in a statement.
“The ministry’s enforcers will also monitor the recall of the eggs as well as the business in entirety. This action is in line with the statements issued by the producers (involved) and other industry players.”
The ministry said the monitoring was also to ensure there was no panic buying of eggs from other brands not affected by the recall.
Based on the monitoring conducted, the recall of eggs at the premises involved were conducted voluntarily by the egg producers themselves.
“The inspections also found that the supply of eggs from other suppliers were sufficient to meet the demand of consumers at this time.”
The ministry also said it will be working with the industry to cater to the demands of affected areas.
It said the demand for eggs nationwide was at 900 million eggs per month compared to the 1.02 billion eggs produced in the same period. – The Vibes, March 22, 2021
