MIRI – Sarawak PKR wants the state government to explain why Covid-19 infections due to inter-district travel continue to occur despite a ban prohibiting such movement.

State PKR vice-president Dr Michael Teo told The Vibes that people keep flouting standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the inter-district travel ban.

“For the past few months, Sarawak has reported many coronavirus cases caused by mass gatherings involving people from various districts.

“And we also hear state politicians speak of the SOPs and restrictions that have been drawn up to stop the spread of Covid-19 due to inter-district movement.

“But the infections continue, and now we hear of yet another mass gathering that has sparked another virus outbreak in Mukah and Selangau districts.

“Someone of authority needs to take responsibility for this.”

Yesterday, a new Covid-19 cluster emerged in Sarawak following a funeral-kenduri-tahlil session attended by kampung folk from Mukah and Sarikei districts.

The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the Kg Rajang Tanjung Manis cluster has logged 29 cases, and 100 individuals will be screened today.

Sarawak still has 34 active clusters, with a death toll of 97. – The Vibes, March 23, 2021
