KUALA LUMPUR – Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan proposed a guaranteed living wage to ensure the economic security and well-being of the Malaysian public.
Shahril said that a guaranteed living wage will ensure that eligible Malaysian workers receive enough to survive.
"For example, based on a survey done by Bank Negara Malaysia, bachelors need at least RM2,700 to survive in the Klang Valley.
“However, there are also fresh graduates who are earning a salary below the current minimum wage of RM1,200,” Shahril said here today at the #SambungYangTergendala event at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Shahril proposed a mechanism where the federal government would top up workers’ wages to a level enough to sustain a living.
“This is not something new. It has been done before, with the BR1M handouts initiated by the Barisan Nasional government.
“However, the problem with such handouts is that the people have to wait for the prime minister to announce when they can get it,” he added.
Shahril said a guaranteed living wage would be a better approach given that such welfare assistance can reach workers who truly need financial help on a monthly basis.
He further explained that such policies have already been implemented in countries like Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
“I don't see why this can’t be implemented within a year.
“In fact, 10 to 15 years from now, I see there being portions of society needing such assistance,” he said.
The #SambungYangTergendala movement by Shahril aims to get feedback from the public on policies to ensure the nation’s well-being.
At the previous #SambungYangTergendala event in Sg Siput, Perak, Shahril had proposed a scheme to ensure jobs are guaranteed.
