MIRI – Sarawak will enforce targeted movement control orders (MCO) in localities considered Covid-19 “danger” zones (areas in which infection or death rates are high).
State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas said targeted MCOs, or enhanced MCOs, are the best methods to stamp out the coronavirus surge in the state.
“The people have blamed the committee for failing to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic in Sarawak. They accuse us of not being effective enough.
“They have launched criticisms against us all over social media, though we have done our best to put in place all the required standard operating procedures (SOPs).
“However, the failure to obey these SOPs has caused the pandemic to become widespread.
“We are going to enforce targeted MCOs or enhanced MCOs in all areas we consider ‘high-risk’ in Sarawak.”
Uggah said the state is reeling from the fourth wave of Covid-19.
“Last year, we imposed lockdowns in many rural longhouses and managed to stop the spread (of the virus) there due to these total lockdowns.
“We will do the same in cities and towns.”
Sarawak recorded 443 fresh coronavirus infections and three new clusters today, with the death toll now at 124.
The three new clusters are Abak Bon cluster in Subis, Jalan Badaruddin cluster in Kuching and Nanga Kelangan cluster in Julau.
The total number of clusters in the state is 49.
Out of the 443 fresh infections today, Bintulu logged the most with 89, followed by Kuching with 26, Miri (61), Sibu (83), Julau (43), Kapit (32), Mukah (31) and Sarikei (22), while other districts have less than 10 each. – The Vibes, April 11, 2021
