GEORGE TOWN – The Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project developer is offering 12 vacancies, despite lacking approval from the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) from the Environment Department (DoE).
A check by The Vibes on the Facebook page Pusat Perkhidmatan Setempat Nelayan found that fishermen, their family members and locals are among those being given priority.
Among the jobs offered are for boatmen, marine monitors, general workers, researchers, laboratory technicians, security guards and cleaners.
An open interview will be held this Saturday from 10am to 2pm at Permatang Damar Laut.
The post also said the minimum requirement to apply is SPM qualification, no work experience required and training will be provided.
Sources told The Vibes that the job offer is part of the implementation of the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP) that needs to be carried out by the state government.
“SIMP does not only involve giving ex-gratia or compensation, but it is more about managing the welfare of fishermen and local residents who are expected to be affected.
“This is a promise that we need to fulfil, as well as proving that the state government and the developers have not neglected the people.”
Earlier this month, Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman reportedly said that the PSR project would not marginalise the fishing community, instead the SIMP was proof of the state government’s commitment in ensuring that the fishing community enjoyed development.
He had added that Penang was still waiting for the approval of the EMP report that was submitted to the DoE early last year and that, at the time he reportedly made the comments, it was expected to be received within 90 days.
The EMP is one of 72 conditions stipulated in the Environmental Impact Assessment approval for the PSR project. – The Vibes, April 21, 2021
