GEORGE TOWN – A total of 18 compounds have been issued by the Penang northeast district police against individuals flouting the standard operating procedures (SOPs) under the movement control order (MCO) from Monday until today.
District police chief Soffian Santong said the compounds were for failing to wear a face mask or check in using the MySejahtera app.
“While SOP compliance has been high among the 588,000 people in the northeast district, there are still some who are complacent and continue to flout the SOPs.
“We want to remind the people to continue to comply with the SOPs as this is the only way to break the chain of infection of Covid-19.
“With this long Aidilfitri holiday, stay indoors,” he said at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu police roadblock this afternoon.
Soffian said they have not detected anyone trying to cross district or state lines so far.
He said those stopped at roadblocks did produce valid documents to justify them being outside.
“Nevertheless, we will continue to monitor the situation and conduct checks in public places.
“If we find that they have no valid reasons to be outside, we will immediately issue them compounds,” he added.
Although the nationwide lockdown only began yesterday, the northeast district has been under lockdown since May 10. The latest MCO will end on June 7.
Meanwhile, Penang recorded a second high in infection numbers, with 385 cases today.
The state saw two deaths involving individuals aged 68 and 83 with underlying conditions of Parkinson, hypertension, and heart issues.
In total, Penang has logged 22,987 cases with 34 deaths and 1,966 cases still active.
The Health Ministry reported that there are now 169 cases due to close contact in Penang, 109 from the clusters, while another 117 were from sporadic circumstances. – The Vibes, May 13, 2021
