MIRI – Residents of four villages in the Trusan sub-district are being evacuated due to flash floods.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the Lawas Civil Defence Force reported flooding in at least four villages as of noon.

“Floods have hit Kg Seberang, Kg Senduyun, Kg Masjid Lama and Kg Tengah. Evacuation of the victims has started. So far, 48 people have been evacuated from their flooded homes.

“The Trusan Civic Centre is being used as a flood shelter.”

The villages, located in Lawas district, are near Sarawak’s border with Sabah. Lawas town, too, has seen heavy rain, resulting in flight cancellations.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd closed Lawas airport this morning after the runway was inundated.

About a dozen flights between Lawas, and Limbang and Miri have been postponed.
