KUALA LUMPUR – A report to be prepared by the Transport Ministry’s special committee investigating the Kelana Jaya Line LRT collision on May 24 will include contributing factors and recommendations, said minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.
He said in a statement today that the report will be submitted to cabinet on June 9.
He added that, during the investigation, the committee looked into operational aspects, such as the standard operating procedures (SOPs), operating manual, rule book, and other related guiding documents.
“This investigation seeks to determine the contributing factors that led to the unfortunate incident between trains 40 and 81 between the KLCC and Kg Baru LRT stations (southbound).
“It is not for the purpose of apportioning blame or liability on any party.”
Wee said the bulk of the report involved the collection of data from closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings, interviews with persons involved with operations, and technical discussions with technology suppliers.
He added the report is informed by a visit of the committee members to the Kelana Jaya LRT’s operation control centre in Lembah Subang on Tuesday.
Wee said a collision simulation session that same day by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd gave further insight into the incident.
The crash on May 24 saw two LRT trains – one coming from Kg Baru and the other from Gombak heading towards Petaling Jaya – colliding in the underground train tunnel.
Of the 213 victims, 64 were sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital. Six were in critical condition, with three requiring ventilators. Fifteen were in semi-critical condition, and the rest sustained non-critical injuries.
Wee said the decision to form the committee was made immediately after the incident and it was given 14 days to complete its investigation and inform the cabinet of its findings.
“The nine-person committee immediately begun collecting all documents, data and other related information on safety and technical operations, and has held several meetings to review and examine that information,” he said.
“It is the government’s intention to continuously find ways and means to improve the safety of public transport for users as a paramount priority.” – The Vibes, June 3, 2021
