KUALA LUMPUR – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has called on politicians to settle their disputes through negotiations and procedures provided for in the federal constitution.
He reminded them to demonstrate maturity and not disregard the people’s welfare – reiterating a point made in his royal adress in the Dewan Rakyat in May.
“The Agong has advised the people, especially politicians, to self-reflect so as to not drag the country into another political limbo amid these trying times and the Covid-19 pandemic,” said a statement by Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Indera Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.
The statement comes as PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is attempting to unseat Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the shake-up caused by Umno’s decision to redefine its terms of cooperation with Perikatan Nasional.
Anwar, who last month dropped a bombshell by announcing he has majority support from among MPs, on Tuesday had an audience with the Agong, where the opposition leader presented documents to prove his claim. However, the statutory declarations and endorsement letters he produced did not contain names.
That night, Umno said it will seek new, “favourable” terms in relation to its support for Muhyiddin’s government.
Secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the party is mulling withdrawing its support for PN should no deal be reached.
The Agong also decreed that all mosques in the country conduct “solat hajat” to pray for the country’s successful containment of Covid-19. – The Vibes, October 16, 2020
